BISMARCK, N.D. - The North Dakota Office of the Secretary of State is recognizing Poll Worker Recruitment Day on August 11, 2026, by encouraging citizens to volunteer as election poll workers for the upcoming November General Election. It’s an opportunity for North Dakotans to learn more about the election process while ensuring polling locations are open for friends and neighbors in their community.
“Elections would not be possible without poll workers,” said Secretary of State Michael Howe. “North Dakotans work together to get things done, and this includes running elections. I appreciate all the poll workers that consistently step forward on behalf of others and encourage anyone who has any interest in serving their community to please contact your county auditor or the Office of Secretary of State.”
North Dakota needs over 3,000 poll workers to conduct a statewide election. Poll workers need to be at least 16 years old, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of North Dakota. They must be able to attend a training session and will be paid for their efforts.
Poll workers help set up and prepare polling locations, check in voters, issue ballots, and assist in the closing of polls at the end of election day. No special experience is needed, and poll workers will learn everything they need to know during a paid training session provided by their county auditor.

National Poll Worker Recruitment Day was established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) in 2020 to highlight the vital role of election workers and encourage more Americans to serve their local communities. Since it started, this day has grown into a nationwide effort to raise awareness of the need for poll workers.
